Lebanon’s low-carb diet

Posted by adiamondinsunlight on June 8, 2008

Yesterday morning at the grocery store the bread vendeuse pointed out something I might otherwise not have noticed: that prices for Arabic bread have effectively increased 17%. The price is the same – LL 1000 for a standard-sized bag – but the amount of bread sold has decreased from 600 grams to 500.

The change is so recent that the bakeries are still using the old bags, but with big white printed labels notifying customers of the new weight:

17% is a big increase. It won’t affect my purchasing decisions, happily, but bread is a major part of poorer families’ diets. I’ve been hearing about another anticipated increase in gasoline prices over the past few days, but the new bread prices were a total surprise.

  1. Here in Montreal, the bag of 700g bread passed from $1.25 to $2.00…a 60% increase!
