What’s in a name: a Hamra “super nightclub”

Posted by adiamondinsunlight on May 30, 2008

When not cataloguing the many signs of the SSNP’s continued presence in Hamra, I’ve been entertaining myself with other neighborhood sights.

In keeping with the “red” theme (red swastikas, red Hamra, red Le Rouge restaurant), I noticed that one of Hamra’s several “super nightclubs” advertises its presence at night with an open door and red lighting. Red light district, indeed!

The nightclub’s sign makes me laugh whenever I read it. In English, its the “Gold Finger” – conjuring up sophisticated images of James Bond, I suppose.

But in Arabic, its the “Cold Finger” – a term which sounds more in keeping with a visit to the doctor than with the pleasures of the flesh:

On the other hand, it certainly looks like its been in business for a very long time. Perhaps the name is actually an asset – after all, what do I know about marketing to super nightclub-patrons 🙂 ?

OK, now don’t keep us in suspense, Diamond;…what DO you know about marketing to Super Night-Club patrons? The Moose is curious.

  2. Actually, it reads in Arabic Cold FinJer LOL!

  3. 🙂 Moose, happily that type of marketing isn’t my specialty. One thing I do always wonder is: how can the men who own these places, and the ones who frequent them, go home to their daughters with a clean conscience?

Kheireddine, lol! I’ve been so obsessed with the “kaff” that I totally neglected the equally funny “jeem”. You are so right: this is the Kold Finjer super-nightclub. It suddenly sounds a bit Scandinavian – Moose, perhaps _that’s_ the marketing here 🙂 !

There is another Super Night Club just by Future TV by the Corniche, called Farid al Atrash Super Night Club. Cracks me up every time I see it. What an honour 😛

  5. Sous, _too funny_! I haven’t seen it, but I’ll see if we can’t get out that way sometime soon. His poor family – but what a hoot!

  6. Sous,

Farid Al-Atrash Super Night Club used to be called Casino Farid Al-Atrash, and it really belonged to Farid Al-Atrash before he died in 1974!

Now with regard to the Farid “whatever” SNC, can we break that family name down to A Trash or is it At Rash. Either one would fit that type of club, wouldn’t it?
