giving til it hurts: the charitable sheep of Islam

Posted by adiamondinsunlight on December 14, 2006

this evening I went to my favorite museum in this city with a friend for a musical concert. After the concert ended, we wandered through the museum, and I found the informational plaque that had me in stitches when I came two years ago.

the museum is dedicated to Islamic arts, and provides a survey of Islamic arts and artisanal productions from the Byzantine through the Qajar eras. Their audience are novices to the subject, and the museum’s curators have taken great pains to explain the various aspects of the religion and the arts that the various ‘Islamic cultures’ have produced.

Sometimes, despite their best efforts, language gets the best of them, as seems to be the case here (the Arabic text is somewhat different and aimed at a more knowledgeable audience):

I imagine that the sheep feel somewhat differently about their “special” way of giving, particularly as Eid al-Adha approaches.

Heading into the Big Eid, let’s hope those sheep are feeling particularly charitable!
