the power of fruit ii: fruit cocktail

Posted by adiamondinsunlight on November 5, 2006

it turns out that fruit has the power to mangle understandings in the other direction as well. a friend of mine told me that years ago, when he first moved to the states, the teenaged him went into a bar in bayside, queens, and ordered a ‘cocktail’.

the bartender looked at him and said: I need to see your id.

my friend looked back, thinking: what? no juice shop in Damascus would ever ask for my id.

in the Levant, and more recently in the Gulf, a ‘fruit cocktail’ is a thick drink, made of layers of pulpy fruit juice: orange, lemon, mango, strawberry, and – my favorite – raspberry. no cocktail available in an American bar could possibly taste as good.

You know I love them too, but although they are made of fruit, they are also made with some million calories worth of sugar . . . aargh!

Had takeout today from Mughal Mughal and thought of you!
