I wondered about the name, too - maybe it just sounds better to Alfa's marketing team? Or maybe "missed call" is seen as too generic to be branded?

I love how its intended to be used "for urgent matters" when Alfa knows people will use it simply because they can't afford the cost of communication. Why didn't they just call it "Missed call balesh" ?

Diamond,
Normally I do not read Naharnet since my Norton software always turns red as soon as I log on to Nahanet. I collected my courage and logged on to investigate the Arabic behind the translation of Mufti Al Jouzo statements. Believe it or not the Arabic is much better, it is actually very clear because you could feel and smell the sarcasm and the satire. I agree with you the translation is rather sophomoric.

Ghassan, you raise a good point: it would be an uphill battle, particularly since hummus can't be localized to just one region. No terroir for chickpeas :)

The whole humus affair is rather silly. I don't have any idea how Mr. Industrialist thinks that Lebanon will benefit from a campaign to convince whoever he wants to convince that humus is a Lebanese dish? So pasta is an italian dish or is it Chinese? Whatever.
As for the idea that the term Feta cannot be used except by the Greeks, Champagne also cannot be used except by the bottlers of Champagne France and Gorgonzola is reserved for an italian region etc... In each of the above anyone can produce blue cheese, or sparkling wine but cannot use the registered trade mark.Humus on the other hand is as generic as it can get.

I so enjoyed your article. You are one of the few to capture the irony and absurdity of this Lebanese media event. The Lebanese can be forgiven though and applauded. They know how to live in denial and have fun in the process! I mean , no government, threats of war at every turn, refugees, etc etc...let's make hummos and have a party!
